Although it is commonly believed that saltwater fishing with an artificial fly is a novelty, it has been here for centuries. One can find descriptions of saltwater sea flies in texts such as Ælian which dates back as early as 200 years BCE. Over the centuries the saltwater fishing technique was forgotten and along with it - the flies that were used in this method.
Nowadays, saltwater fishing is becoming more and more popular, together with sea flies. Although they do not resemble the old patterns, they are certainly as efficient.
